State Policy Updates
Building our Workforce: Future Ready Iowa
The Future Ready Iowa Act (HF2458) is on its way to become law after both the House and Senate unanimously passed it. The Economic Alliance has been supportive of the Future Ready Iowa initiatives, which aim to create opportunities for more Iowans to have careers in high-demand fields and reach the goal of 70 percent of our workforce having education or training beyond high school by the year 2025.
The Act seeks to establish a Registered Apprenticeship Development program, a volunteer mentoring program, a summer youth intern program, summer post-secondary courses for high school students that are aligned with high-demand career pathways, an employer innovation fund, a Future Ready Iowa skilled workforce scholarship and grant programs and funds.
The Economic Alliance hosted Governor Reynolds last year during her Future Ready Iowa Tour where members had the opportunity to provide feedback and recommendations to the governor to address our region’s workforce shortages and strategies to fill the skills gap.
Advocating with Members at the Iowa State Capitol
The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance and the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce again joined forces for our annual member lobbying day at the Capitol in Des Moines on Tuesday, March 20. Community business leaders and members of both organizations met with House & Senate leadership to advocate for public policy priorities for our region. This year’s priorities focused on our support for Future Ready Iowa, education programs and institutes that help fill the talent pipeline, tax reform and protecting backfill for cities and counties.
In addition to lobbying efforts, the contingent shared a bit of the region’s flavor, by delivering kolaches (a much-anticipated tradition) and bags filled with goodies from businesses and organizations around the region. ICR Iowa postcards addressed to legislators were also distributed to share the news of our region's new brand. Thank you to all of the member businesses that accompanied us on this important day of advocacy. We're looking forward to next year's ICR Iowa Day at the Capitol!
Thank you to Kolache Sponsor, NextEra Energy - Duane Arnold.
