Advocating for Trade Deal that Would Benefit Iowa's Economy

Apr 24, 2019

Members of the Economic Alliance often ask what they can do to help us move the needle on our public policy work. Contacting our elected officials to advocate on critical issues is the most effective tool of our advocacy efforts, and we need your voice!

Leaders from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico signed a trade deal in November to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The agreement, called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), updates the original 1993 NAFTA deal and includes changes for automobile makers, updates to labor and environmental standards, intellectual property protections, and digital trade provisions. The agreement also opens new markets for U.S. farmers. Our regional economy’s growth depends on this agreement continuing.

We are part of the USMCA Coalition, a coalition of over 360 associations and companies from across the country committed to communicating with members of Congress to urge them to support the agreement. Anytime we speak with a federal elected official, USMCA approval is a topic of conversation, including when we recently hosted Representative Abby Finkenauer to our office and participated in a roundtable on the harmful effects of retaliatory tariffs with Senator Joni Ernst, shown on the right. The Economic Alliance has long supported free and fair-trade agreements to promote Iowa’s economy. According to the Business Roundtable, 130,000 Iowa jobs are supported by trade with Canada and Mexico, and our state exports $6.6 billion alone to the two countries. 1-in-4 manufacturers in Iowa sell to Canada and Mexico. Nearly one-third of U.S. agricultural exports went to our North American neighbors in 2017. We’re advocating for a free trade deal, and we need your voice to make our message louder.

USMCA still needs to be ratified by all three governments.

The Economic Alliance urges Congress to approve the agreement, and you can help us. Contact the Iowa Congressional delegation (listed right) and ask them to support the USMCA. Remind them how important this issue is for Iowa’s economy and the economy of the entire nation.
