Laborshed Study Shows We Are Moving in the Right Direction

Jun 12, 2019

We know that workforce availability is a top concern for area employers. Every few years, Iowa Workforce Development completes a Laborshed Study for our region. The latest ICR Laborshed study shows we are moving in the right direction, but there is still room for improvement in getting skilled workers into the workforce.

Our workforce is growing. We have over 726,000 people in our estimated labor force, an increase from the 617,000 reported in our 2016 study.

We have an available workforce. In fact, 91,000 of our currently employed citizens and 54,900 of our unemployed citizens are likely to accept a new position depending on wage and benefits. If the position offers $15 or more per hour, 50% of those currently employed candidates and 75% of the unemployed candidates are likely to make the move. We also have over 20,000 homemakers and over 11,000 retirees who are interested in joining the workforce.

We have an educated workforce. Of those who are currently employed and likely to change their employment, 76.5% have an education beyond high school and 52.3% have completed an associates, bachelors, or advanced degree.

Identifying the barriers and opportunities for growth in our region is critical to the work we do in conjunction with ICR IOWA and other partners to create economic growth strategies and initiatives. Read the full Laborshed Study at
