Engage With the Future Workforce and Explore Innovative Solutions for Your Business With Iowa BIG

Jul 11, 2019

Iowa BIG connects high school students and businesses to create a real-world learning experience for students that develops their agency, efficacy and passions. Businesses and nonprofits engage with students directly, helping mold the future workforce, as students tackle non-mission critical, yet important, projects and initiatives for the organization.

Right now, Iowa BIG is looking for community partners to create projects for the 250 students who will participate in Iowa BIG in the 2019 - 2020 school year. If your business is trying to look at an opportunity from a different angle, explore an idea that’s been on the backburner, or just try something new, consider Iowa BIG. Get more information by contacting Amanda Zhorne at azhorne@iowabig.org or Laura Seyfer at lseyfer@iowabig.org. For inspiration, Economic Alliance member ImOn Communications reflects on how a non-mission critical project was executed with the help of Iowa BIG students.

“Company wide, ImOn values creating a positive impact in every community we serve in Eastern Iowa. Iowa BIG does this as well, impact the community. We had an idea for a project that would provide free Wi-Fi for families who are unable to afford it. As a company, this project wasn’t mission critical, and wasn’t moving forward. We thought bringing in actual students’ perspectives would benefit us and add a spin onto our project.

They helped us figure out what those families need and what would be best for the students. Their input and ideas were extremely valuable and real to us. They learned professional communication skills like how to write emails and other skills business professionals practice every day, skills that aren’t taught in schools. The corporate world is filled with projects, and we can give students from BIG insight on what they can expect, how to gather information, and then plan a course of action rather than coming into a classroom and being told what you need to learn. Iowa BIG is preparing our future workforce for the real business world while they’re still in high school, and that’s a positive impact on the community.”
