New Downtown Benches Align with Other Beautification Efforts and Meet Americans with Disabilities Act Requirements
Oct 25, 2019
New benches are on the way to Downtown Cedar Rapids. Look for 70 new, metal benches throughout the district starting this week. The 140 previous wooden benches were removed over the last few months.
In the fall of 2018, the Downtown Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District Commission allocated funds for a streetscape project in 2019. Upon discussion, benches were determined as an area for improvement. Constant upkeep and repair of the previous benches were part of the replacement decision. Design alignment with Third Avenue bridge beautification efforts and Third Avenue infrastructure improvement projects were also part of the decision.
Of the 70 new benches, 56 will look like the photo above, with armrests on both ends of the bench. To meet requirements from the Americans with Disabilities Act, 14 of the new benches will have an armrest on the left end and in the center of the bench.
