Our Country Needs a Trade Deal with Mexico and Canada Now

Oct 29, 2019

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, is an updated trade agreement between the three countries. There are some big reasons we’d like to see Congress approve the agreement now.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, in 2018, Iowa alone exported $6.6 billion to Canada and Mexico. The Business Roundtable estimates 130,000 Iowa jobs are supported by trade with Canada and Mexico with 1-in-4 Iowa manufacturers selling to Canada and Mexico. Nearly one-third of U.S. agricultural exports went to our North American neighbors in 2017. But it’s not just agriculture products that Canada and Mexico buy from Iowa businesses. Machinery, processed foods, transportation equipment and beverage products are also among Iowa’s top ten exported items to Canada and Mexico.

Despite unrelated political developments, Trump administration officials and members of Congress of both parties continue to focus on USMCA as a key legislative priority and indicate optimism about the path forward. The Economic Alliance continues to speak to our federal delegation about the need for USMCA to be approved, including joining more than 350 associations and businesses in a letter calling on Congressional leadership to support action on USMCA.

With a limited number of voting days remaining on Congress’ legislative calendar, we call on Economic Alliance members to help us redouble our bipartisan outreach to the Iowa federal delegation. The U.S. Chamber has an easy to use tool at www.uschamber.com/usmca where you can send a message to your members of Congress and urge them to support Iowa’s economy and approve USMCA. We also encourage Economic Alliance members to use #USMCANOW when sharing messages related to USMCA on social media.
