City of Cedar Rapids Visual Arts Commission Seeks Artist for Second Street Pocket Plaza
Jan 17, 2020
The Cedar Rapids Visual Arts Commission is seeking submissions for art designs to be incorporated into the new Pocket Plaza in Downtown Cedar Rapids, located on Second Street SE between Third Avenue and Second Avenue. The site includes two opportunities for digital art: a banner mural to be located on the side of the building currently occupied by Cobble Hill restaurant, and five panels attached to the fence near the seating area in the plaza. The Commission is seeking one artist to complete all panels for cohesive imagery, and is seeking original digital designs that can be printed and displayed on the side of the building and on the fence panels.
Specific dimensions include:
Side of the building: Four 8’ x 15’ fabric panels to be installed on the wall.
Fence panels: Five 3’ x 4’ 9” panels to be attached to existing frames along the rear fence of the plaza.
Art can be created in any medium, but must be digitized and able to be printed at a large scale. Artists will be limited to four proposals each. The selected artist will receive $1,500 for use of their artwork. The City will cover the costs of printing and installation. Proposals should complement the design and planned public art of the new Pocket Plaza.
The pocket plaza is expected to be complete by Spring 2020, and will also feature a sculpture created by local artist Cara Briggs Farmer.

The deadline for submissions is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9. Please email submissions to Visual Arts Commission staff liaison Sylvia Brueckert at email@example.com. PDF or JPEG format preferred. Final selection will be made mid-March.
