Downtown Building to be Illuminated with New Video Projector Installation
Jan 30, 2020
Recent years have proven illuminating for Downtown Cedar Rapids. An installation lighting up the Armstrong Center will soon join the list of Downtown lighting projects.
A permanent projector will be placed on Third Avenue SE that will display bright and clear images, patterns, art, and possibly even film onto the exterior of the Armstrong Center along Third Avenue, near Third Street SE. Once operational, the Downtown Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District and the Economic Alliance will oversee the projections’ images and schedule. Look for this display in spring 2020. A sample of what it will look like is shown on the right.
The Economic Alliance Community Development Innovation Council has long worked to make the Third Avenue and Third Street SE a signature spot in Downtown Cedar Rapids, in part because Third Street is a connector street that runs through Downtown Cedar Rapids and the Czech Village/New Bohemia District.
This project joins other recent lighting projects Downtown, including colored light installations on the Third Avenue bridge, brighter and more energy efficient streetlights throughout the district and a number of Downtown organizations that regularly illuminate their buildings at night, including UFG Insurance and Alliant Energy.
Enhanced, uniform lighting creates a better experience for pedestrians in the district. It gives the streetscape more energy at night and provides a heightened feeling of security in the evening hours. Emotive lighting on building facades also helps brand and differentiate Downtown Cedar Rapids from other, surrounding core districts and creates a sense of place for residents and visitors alike.
