Jan 03, 2020
The Economic Alliance announces Duane Smith, Executive Chairman, TrueNorth Companies as the recipient of the 2019 Howard Hall Excellence in Business Award.
Smith will receive the award and provide acceptance remarks during the Economic Alliance’s Annual Meeting on Wednesday, January 29 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Convention Complex in Downtown Cedar Rapids.
“Duane's business savvy; his entrepreneurial spirit, his commitment to not only insurance, but to the local business community in general made him really stand out to the Selection Committee,” said Doug Neumann, Executive Director, Economic Alliance. “It was felt that Howard Hall and Duane Smith would have really connected in their interest in leaving their community (and the world) a little better off than how they found it, whether that is through their industries, their community contributions, or their direct legacies.”
In addition to his role at TrueNorth, Smith also serves as chairman for Avant INS. and Health Solutions. Duane also owns Duffy's Collectible Cars, a venture that marries his love for business with the thrill of fast-moving machinery. As president of Insurance Service Corporation, Duane represented one of the three companies that merged to form TrueNorth in 2001, creating the largest financial services firm of its kind in Eastern Iowa. The organization now spans well beyond the state's borders with 14 locations throughout the United States.
The Howard Hall Excellence in Business Award is given to a premier business leader who exemplifies the outstanding, enduring business values of Howard Hall and his passion for a vibrant Cedar Rapids.
