USMCA Success: Your Voices Make a Difference
Feb 26, 2020
Congratulations to all Economic Alliance member companies and employees who contributed to the positive outcome of the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement. Your advocacy, along with other small businesses, associations, manufacturers and farmers across the country, to Members of Congress over the past several years, was an extensive effort that made a difference. We applaud our Iowa Congressional delegation for supporting our advocacy. At the time of this publication’s printing, President Trump was scheduled to sign the trade agreement on Wednesday, January 29 and we await its implementation over the coming year.
While no trade agreement is perfect, there is clearly broad agreement that USMCA will preserve and strengthen U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico. This trade agreement is particularly important to Iowa’s economy, as Canada and Mexico are our top two trading partners. According to the Business Roundtable, a membership organization representing chief executive officers of major U.S. companies, 130,000 Iowa jobs are supported by trade with Canada and Mexico, and our state exports $6.6 billion alone to the two countries. 1-in-4 manufacturers in Iowa sell to Canada and Mexico. This is why the Economic Alliance supported the trade deal. Our collective voices contributed to the successful outcome.
