Parkway Improvements Coming to First Avenue in the MedQuarter
Jun 01, 2020
After completing a significant parkway improvement project along 10th Street SE from Fifth Avenue to Eighth Avenue SE last year, the MedQuarter Regional Medical District, in coordination with the City of Cedar Rapids, will continue parkway improvement efforts this year on First Avenue.
Scheduled to start in late May, this year’s parkway improvement project will span from Sixth Street to Tenth Street on both the north and south sides of First Avenue east. Improvements will include replacement of ash trees due to effects of the invasive emerald ash borer beetle, the addition of tree beds with mulch, street light upgrades, improved ADA-compliant ramps and crosswalk devices at all intersections with decorative bricks and pavers, sidewalk replacement, decorative parking lot screening, landscaping with shrubs, perennials and grasses, and the addition of benches and waste receptacles.
First Avenue is a significant gateway into the District and these improvements will give people a sense of place as they arrive. These upcoming improvements and the completed improvements on 10th Street SE are part of the MedQuarter’s Master Parkway Improvement Plan, which aims to create a superior visitor experience through implementation of high-quality streetscape improvements within the public right-of-way. In conjunction with the MedQuarter’s First Avenue parkway improvement project, the City of Cedar Rapids will be performing concrete curb and asphalt gutter repairs, replacing traffic signals and establish two northbound lanes on Eighth Street NE for easier I-380 access. There will be parking and lane reductions during the construction which is scheduled to conclude in November.
