MedQuarter Partners with Make It OK to Present Capstone Event

Feb 15, 2021

In 2020, amidst the COVID pandemic and the derecho, a group of leaders came together to launch the Make It OK campagn in Linn County. The goal is to reduce stigma related to mental illness, in conjunction with the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative. The effort has included a monthly virtual series called Make It Ok Mid-Week, the training of more than 100 Make It Ok community ambassadors, engagement of high school and college students, and work with employers to provide tools for their employees. The event series has covered topics such as ‘Stop the Silence; Stop the Stigma,’ ‘Medical and Spiritual First Aid’,’ and ‘Aging and Isolation.’

The capstone event for Make it OK Mid-Week Series on March 11 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. is called ‘Make it OK - Call to Action.’ This event will further the work in reducing stigma related to mental illness. Ben Nemtin, international speaker and #1 New York Times best-selling author will deliver the keynote. Ben will share his story of living with anxiety and depression that caused him to “drop out of college, get dropped from the rugby team and become a shut-in at his parent’s home”. In a chance to re-set, he, along with three of his friends, created a bucket list of 100 things they wanted to accomplish and for every item they were able to accomplish, they would help another person achieve something on their bucket list. Ben’s journey included making a big donation to charity, playing basketball with President Obama, being on Oprah, and helping to deliver a baby to name a few while paying it forward to help others accomplish the impossible. Along with Ben’s keynote, you’ll hear other community leaders’ messages of resiliency in the face of uncertainty as a path forward for 2021. We look forward to celebrating our community resilience, furthering awareness of mental illness, and gaining commitment from our community to engage in simple acts to Make It OK.
