2021 Parkway Improvements in the MedQuarter
Mar 12, 2021
For the fourth year in a row, the MedQuarter Regional Medical District plans to continue implementing its Master Parkway Improvement Plan this summer by continuing work along 1st Avenue. After completing parkway improvements on the north and south sides of 1st Avenue from 6th to 10th Streets last year, work will continue from 10th to 12th Street.
Anticipated to start in June, improvements will include replacement of ash trees, street light upgrades, improved ADA-compliant ramps and crosswalk devices at all intersections with decorative bricks and pavers, sidewalk replacement, decorative parking lot screening, landscaping with shrubs, perennials and grasses, and the addition of benches and waste receptacles.
First Avenue is a significant gateway into the District from the east and west. These improvements will give people a sense of place as they arrive. These upcoming improvements and the already completed improvements aim to create a superior visitor experience through implementation of high-quality streetscape improvements within the public right-of-way.

In conjunction with the MedQuarter’s First Avenue parkway improvement project, the City of Cedar Rapids will be performing concrete curb and asphalt gutter repairs within the project area and replacing traffic signals at the 1st Avenue and 12th Street/Coe Road intersection.
