Inclusive ICR Welcomes Urban Dreams to Cedar Rapids

Inclusive ICR, the regional coalition with a mission of working together to grow diversity and inclusion in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids (ICR) workforce, met recently to learn about how Urban Dreams’ plans to address employer needs for filling lower to middle-skill level jobs in Cedar Rapids. Urban Dreams is a non-profit organization that began in Des Moines in 1985 and promotes a workforce model developed to upskill workforce, advance employees to livable wages and offers businesses a solution to expansion challenges. Urban Dreams provides resources for people of color and low-income individuals and families. Some of these resources include programming for substance abuse, mental health, job training and placement, inmate reentry services, community engagement, education and community advocacy.

In Cedar Rapids, a new workforce strategy is underway between the City of Cedar Rapids and Urban Dreams. Partnerships with local employers will provide assistance in the development of workforce pipelines, implementation of career readiness and soft-skills training courses, case management assistance, job shadowing, and on-the-job training and mentoring. Much of the workforce recruitment efforts will be focused on adults and young adults from the city’s most underserved and low-socioeconomic areas. In addition, a food pantry and office will be established at the Ladd Library on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. The Economic Alliance is committed to helping businesses succeed. From our small to mid-size member businesses, we continue to hear about the difficulty in filling entry to mid-level positions. In an upcoming program on March 16, we welcome Urban Dreams as they present information specifically created for these business and workforce challenges.
