Full Steam Ahead for Leadership for Five Seasons Youth Program
May 25, 2021
The Leadership for Five Seasons Youth Class of 2021 has continued full steam ahead in their Leadership for Five Seasons (LFS) journey after several sessions were postponed due to COVID-19. On April 7, 2021 they met in-person for their Business and Economics Day led by Chairs Michael Rozum (Acumen Advisors) and Kyle Zimmerman (Securian Advisors). The students were provided with a star-studded day filled with interactions from many incredible local business leaders.
The day started at NewBo City Market where the group heard from panelists Steve Shriver (Eco Lips, Brewhemia, Soko, The Olympic), Eric Schmitt (Rapids Wholesale Equipment), Jaymie McGrath (McGrath Family of Dealerships) and Julie Parisi (NewBo City Market). These panelists took students through their business and entrepreneurial journeys, educational backgrounds, trials and tribulations and encouraged them to work hard, never give up and surround themselves with positive influences.
Next up on the agenda, Lura McBride (Van Meter), Jason Smith (TrueNorth Companies) and Mike Wehr (Frontier Co-Op) spoke with the students about their companies’ backgrounds, words of advice they’d give their past self, why Cedar Rapids is the place to start up shop and job shadow/internship opportunities in the area. Students were also given the opportunity to pitch their “Shark Tank” business ideas to these leaders for feedback and advice.
The insightful day was wrapped up by individual presentations and motivational speeches from Rue Patel (RueWorks) and Beth Malicki (KCRG-TV9) on how they got to where they are today in the business world - a passion filled day to say the least.
We are extremely grateful that our LFS students were given the opportunity to hear from these influential voices in our community, and look forward to their futures and what these bright students will do in our community. To learn more about the LFS program, visit www.cedarrapids.org/LFS.
