Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Takes Effect in October

This month all businesses in the 319 and 515 area codes must convert to 10-digit dialing for local numbers. Anyone calling within these area codes will now be required to dial the area code plus the seven digit local phone number. For businesses, it may mean re-programming office equipment or systems like fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, Fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, Speed dialers, Mobile or other wireless phone contact lists, Call forwarding settings, Voicemail services and other functions.
This change is due to a federal order that adopted 988 as a new 3-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. For 988 to work properly, everyone needs to use all 10 digits to dial a phone number. Mandatory 10-digit dialing will become effective on October 24, 2021. The Economic Alliance will be converting its phone system to accommodate this requirement at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021. After this time, you can reach our main line and any direct staff lines using the 319 area code.
