For nearly three decades, His Hands Free Clinic has provided no-cost medical care to people who don’t have the financial means to pay for it themselves. Clinic staff, which includes medical and dental professionals, can treat just about anything, from diabetes to tooth pain and stiff backs. The clinic also offers spiritual counseling for those in need of love and compassion.
Although the Covid-19 pandemic has made it impossible for the nonprofit to host in-person fundraising events, or to fully welcome back all of its volunteers, many of whom are over the age of 65, His Hands has continued to help hundreds of local residents. During this difficult time, the nonprofit has relied on donations and other types of aid from many local partners, including the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance.
“Cedar Rapids is a very generous community, and the nonprofit players work well together to help people get back on their feet and thrive,” says Dawn Brouwers, director of the His Hands Free Clinic. Brouwers says she’s also grateful to the Economic Alliance for helping the nonprofit secure media coverage, which resulted in an increase in donations.
At His Hands, everyone pitches in to make sure patients receive the care they need to get back to family and work. Brouwers says she is indebted to the organization’s staff members, who see the care they provide as a mission, not a job. “I’m proud of how well the staff has pulled together in difficult times to provide a stable place for clients,” she says. “They are the real heroes.”
In 2020, His Hands Clinic treated nearly 900 individuals, an impressive accomplishment in a trying year marked by a global pandemic, ongoing recovery from the derecho storm, and a move to a larger medical building. Says Brouwers: “We are very proud of the work we have done to keep our community healthy.”
