Each dollar you spend locally returns an average of 3X more to our community than buying elsewhere. Buy Here features 12 local businesses that represent what makes our local economy and adds value for local consumers.
As dairy farms continue to close due to the poor milk prices, Dan and Debbie Takes decided to proactively add value to their 22-year old farm by opening Dan and Debbie’s Creamery in 2016. Now, this business is a favorite for Ely residents and visitors alike. With sustainability, creativity and innovation the family has developed a business that allows their farm to grow, becoming more sustainable all while adding to the local economy.
This family-owned and operated farm to table dairy production facility produces small batch dairy products such as cheese curds, bottled cream top milk and ice cream. Customers travel from near and far to patronize the Creamery and purchase farm-fresh dairy. Dan and Debbie’s store front also offers the resale of other local, Iowa-made products such as jams, honey, granola, soaps and more. Very soon the family will expand their products to include artisan block cheese and ice cream treats like holiday ice cream pies.
Additionally, Dan and Debbie’s Creamery seeks to educate the community about agriculture by offering a viewing area where patrons can watch production of the small-batch dairy products. Groups from all over the Midwest tour to learn about the business, dairy farming, agriculture and entrepreneurship.
“Dan and Debbie’s Creamery is an example of how dairy farming is not only possible, but profitable within our industry today,” said Josie Rozum, Operations & Marketing Manager, Dan and Debbie’s Creamery. “Success in its simplest form is creating delicious dairy products for the community while never wavering the health and happiness of our cows!”
