The story of Grin N Goose is one of Midwestern work ethic, answering the door when opportunity knocks and a dash of luck.
Owner Brett Klein’s background is in the food and beverage industry, working at establishments like Moose McDuffy’s and the Cedar Rapids Piano Lounge. Following those 13 years of experience, he took some time away from the industry to work in construction. Surprisingly, Klein feels that lessons learned in the construction industry help him with the overall management of Grin N Goose today.
The concept of Grin N Goose began one day over lunch as Klein overheard news that a previous downtown Cedar Rapids restaurant would soon shutter its doors. Realizing the opportunity this space and its location presented, Klein sent message to the owner and inquired about leasing the space. As luck would have it, his former business partner was driving through town right around this same time. A short two and a half weeks later, a lease was signed on what would become Grin N Goose.
Since opening in early 2017, Grin N Goose’s mouthwatering burgers, flavorful appetizers and fresh soups and salads have brought in a steady stream of patrons. The spot boasts an Iowa theme with all wall décor hand painted by local artists. Klein loves knowing he had a hand in the rehab of an old building into an establishment that now employs 29 people and provides a space where Cedar Rapidans can relax, with menu options that are reminiscent of growing up in a small town.
