When Brooke Fitzgerald first approached her husband about leaving her then full-time, salaried job with benefits to follow her dream of opening a full-service coffee shop in Downtown Cedar Rapids, he was all in. While a bit scary for their young family at the time, Brooke, an Eastern Iowa native and Mount Mercy University alum, felt strongly enough in a business plan that would create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where service and commitment to the community was paired with caffeinating patrons. With the help of her brother, Aaron Murphy, she opened The Early Bird in November of 2011.
The Early Bird team takes great pride in their customers’ experiences, and the ability for them to come in and conduct their business in a positive environment. Fitzgerald knows she’s hit the mark when customers walk in and express how cute, comfortable, welcoming or buzzing their business is and stays for hours on end.
“The Early Bird was founded with the intent of becoming a central part of our downtown community,” said Fitzgerald. “In just a few short years, we have created a space to connect with our growing downtown core and the movers and shakers that make it thrive.”
On a daily basis, you may run into metro area non-profits, start-ups, CEOs, government officials and creatives patronizing the business. Fitzgerald feels pride in the fact that the rebuilding and reshaping of Cedar Rapids can often be found taking place within her business’ four walls.
