Living in downtown Cedar Rapids puts you right in the center of all the action, and has been awarded one of the Best Places for Affordable Homes by CNN’s Fortune and Money Magazine. Our housing options continue to expand, and the demand increases with every new development. We're working hard to bring a variety of options for every price point to the area.
As a part of our community development initiatives, our Development Committee works with community leaders and developers to bring more housing options to the downtown core and neighboring areas. Downtown has a unique variety of housing options, including loft projects in the New Bohemia Neighborhood that offer the type of eclectic urban living spaces considered unique to our community.

In 1986, a Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) was created by vote of the downtown property owners for community development, streetscape and beautification improvements. They agreed to tax themselves as an additional assessment every year for 20 years to revitalize the area.
Today, the SSMID Commission is composed of property owners or representatives appointed by the Mayor to continue these initiatives, and remain visionaries in our plans for the vitality of downtown Cedar Rapids. The SSMID Commission works closely with the Economic Alliance to help carry out the commission’s strategic plan and meet its goals.
2017 is a renewal year for the Downtown SSMID. The last decade has been filled with success for the Downtown SSMID and you can read more about these successes in the Downtown SSMID 10 Year Report that details the SSMID's history, how it has built value and see the objectives for the next 10 years of the Downtown SSMID.

Vision Cedar Rapids
The Cedar Rapids community has seen an incredible amount of change over the past several years, due largely from the impact of the 2008 flood. The Economic Alliance is playing a part in assisting the City of Cedar Rapids with flood protection efforts through public policy advocacy and community outreach. As a staunch supporter and advocate for state and federal dollars, the EA has assisted the City of Cedar Rapids in securing $264 million over 20 years to build a flood protection system on both sides of the Cedar River.
This Vision Cedar Rapids plan provides a broad understanding of downtown’s purpose and helps to direct the energy and resources of future downtown development opportunities. As with the original plan, previous planning efforts and documents were critical to the development. There is no intent to reinvent the wheel, but rather to update already-dynamic plans to incorporate the latest circumstances and future opportunities. Read the full plan in it’s entirety below:
Downtown Facade Improvement Program
The Downtown Façade Improvement Program (the Program) is intended to encourage property and business owners within the downtown to renovate their building fronts and other exteriors plainly visible to the public, in order to promote more renovations and high quality exterior improvements. Project costs are shared by the Downtown SMMID Commission and the City of Cedar Rapids.
A number of grants have been awarded and some of these projects have been completed, like the Armstrong Centre, the Clock House, the Gatto Building, Quarter Barrel Arcade & Brewery and Theatre Cedar Rapids. Grant awards currently under construction include Smulekoffs and Town Centre.
To find out how to apply for the Program, contact Casey Prince, Downtown Executive Director.
